We spent the rest of the day trying to contact Alicia’s next of kin and figure out what to do with little Zoey. We had to call her ex-husband. Neither of us wanted to. If he beat her as badly as they said, he shouldn’t have custody of Zoey. But he was her father. And he needed to know about his daughter. He had rights and all that. So even though I hated to do it, I called him.

“Mark Stinger?”

“What do you want?”

Sounds like a nice man. “I am Special Agent Storm with the Honolulu FBI. Is this Mark Stinger?”

He went silent for a moment. “Whatever she says I did is a lie. I don’t even live there anymore.”

“No, sir. I’m calling to tell you your wife was murdered.”

I heard him take in a long, deep breath. And then he chuckled.

“Huh. She always said I would be the one to kill her someday. Guess she was wrong. What does this have to do with me? Am I a suspect? ’Cause, like I said, I don’t live there no more. I live in Kentucky. And I haven’t left the state since I got here months ago.”

“Are you going to ask about your daughter?”

“Oh yeah. Zo okay?”

“She is still alive. Even though she was left in her crib for a few days while her mother’s body was decomposing on the floor.”

“Damn, that’s rough. Do I have to take her? Laura didn’t want me around her, and you know what? I prefer it that way. She’ll probably end up a stuck-up bitch like her mother.”

“Sir, this—”

“Look, do what you gotta do, lady. I don’t care.”

Before I could even say anything else, he hung up. My blood was practically vibrating beneath my skin. Boiling in my veins. How could he be so callous toward his own wife and daughter? At least Tony had had more luck with his calls.

“We need to head to the women’s shelter downtown,” he told me. He looked down at his watch. “Evelyn Witt was on Laura’s paperwork as her next of kin. She runs the shelter. She said she’ll be there in the morning to talk with us. Also said she wasn’t surprised but didn’t elaborate.”

I nodded and leaned back in my chair. I was ready to go home. I was ready to ease into a hot bath and then crawl into bed.I needed to change my clothes. Wash my hair. Even at my desk, miles away from Laura’s body, I could still smell her. Every time I moved, I smelled her decomposing body as if I were still in the room with her.Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. I shook my head to get rid of them.

“Come on. Let me take you home. You can take a shower and get something to eat and talk to your brother and your friend.”

My mouth swung open. I had completely forgotten about them. I pulled my personal phone out of my desk drawer. Four missed calls.

When we reached my house, there was a car in the driveway.
